Exposure Effects

While it is possible, due to beam divergence, atmospheric attenuation, and blink reflex, permanent eye damage is unlikely. The most common hazard in a laser incident is the inability to see outside or inside the aircraft.

What to do if your Aircraft is Lased

  • Direct the crew to look away! A statement such as "everyone look left, we are being lased from the right" helps prevent exposing other crew members.
  • Turn the aircraft away from the laser source when able.
  • Note aircraft position, heading, clock position of the laser source, and angle to the ground.
  • Report the incident to the nearest ATC facility as soon as possible.
  • Once safe on deck, ensure exposed crew members are examined.
  • Submit an FAA Laser Exposure Report.
  • Follow all company guidelines and protocols.
